Routes

Routes

The routes on this page are described by types of place (the road, a coastal village, a cove, a viewpoint) rather than by addresses or names of holiday bases. That makes them easier to adapt to your own trip and to the weather on the day. We do not give distances, travel times or timetables: all of these depend on the season, the state of the road and the rules in force when you travel. What matters in every route is the order of steps, checking the rules in advance and leaving time for the journey back.

Unhurried routes work best on this coast. The sea is generous to those who are in no rush and know when to turn back on a bad forecast.

— Editor's note

How these routes were put together: each can be done without buying a tour, or with an organised tour where the rules require it, and the stops are described as types of place.

A day by the sea from Vladivostok

One cove, an early start and back before dark.

Stops: 5 by car or bus, one day

  1. Early start from Vladivostok

Leave in the morning so the road does not eat up all the daylight. Before you go, check the wind and wave forecast for the coast.

  2. The road south

Keep your passport to hand: part of the district lies in the border zone. Only stop for a break where it is permitted and safe.

  3. Coastal village

A good place to buy water and food and to ask locals how the sea is behaving today.

  4. A cove with a beach

The main part of the day. Only swim in calm weather, do not swim out far and never leave children by the water unattended.

  5. Heading back before dark

Start back early: the road is busy in the evening, and tiredness at the wheel builds up without you noticing.

A weekend on the Posyet Bay coast

Two days on one bay without needless transfers.

Stops: 6 by car, two days

  1. Staying in a village on the bay

Choose one place for both nights so you do not waste time moving around. Check booking terms directly with the owners.

  2. Morning at the cove

The seaside is usually quieter and less crowded in the morning. It is the best time for a swim and an unhurried walk along the shore.

  3. Viewpoint on a cape

Climb a rocky cape only in dry weather and in sturdy shoes. Do not go near the cliff edge for the sake of a photo.

  4. Boat trip

If the weather allows, take in the indented coastline from the water. Ask about life jackets before you board.

  5. Bad-weather backup

In strong wind or fog, swap the boat trip for a walk around the village and along the shore. Plans on land can almost always be moved.

  6. Back to Vladivostok

Leave with plenty of time before dark and check the forecast for the road.

A guided trip to protected areas

The reserve and the national park, strictly on their terms.

Stops: 5 with an organised tour, one day

  1. Visiting rules, in advance

Before the trip, read the rules of the reserve or national park and find out which routes are open to visitors.

  2. Tour meeting point

Arrive early and ask your guide what you may and may not do on the route. Keep your documents with you.

  3. Permitted route

Walk only where the tour leads or where the rules allow. Do not leave the trail and do not leave litter.

  4. Wildlife-watching spot

Watch birds and animals from a distance, keep quiet and do not feed the wildlife. Binoculars are more useful here than getting close.

  5. Back to the meeting point

Stay with the group until the end of the route and do not linger on your own: the rules of the protected area apply until you leave it.

How to adapt a route to the weather

  • In strong wind and waves, skip swimming and boat trips
  • In fog, do not plan a boat trip or drives on unfamiliar dirt roads
  • In hot weather, move shoreline walks to the morning and evening
  • With children, choose one cove a day and take frequent breaks in the shade
  • If you have not arranged a pass or booked a tour, stay in areas where neither is needed
  • Destinations

Six types of destination in the district, from bays and beaches to the western forests, and how to choose.

  • Sights

Capes, bays, islands, a lighthouse and forested slopes: what to look for and how to behave in protected areas.

  • Getting there

Car, bus, boat or guided tour: how to get there from Vladivostok and what to keep in mind.
