An independent travel guide to Khasansky District. This is not the website of the district administration, a nature reserve or a tour operator, and it is not connected with the former website on this domain. Check border-zone and protected-area rules with official sources.

Sights

Sights

The main sights of Khasansky District are not buildings but the coast itself: capes, coves, offshore islands, the lighthouse on Cape Gamov and forested slopes. Many of these places lie within protected areas, so getting to know them starts with the rules. Below are the types of natural site along the coast, what to keep in mind at each and what is worth watching. You will not find opening hours, prices or ratings here: the conditions are set by the nature reserve, the national park and other official sources.

The best view of the bay belongs to whoever stops and waits. The fog lifts, the birds return, and the coast makes more sense than any map.

— Editor's note

How this section works: it describes types of place rather than specific coves and trails. The rules for visiting protected areas are set by the nature reserve and the national park.

Coastal nature

Five types of place you will find on and around the shores of Posyet Bay.

  1. Rocky cape

Where: Where the shore juts out into the sea, at the edges of coves and peninsulas

Cliffs, drops and wide views over the bay. Capes frame Posyet Bay itself: Cape Suslov on one side and Cape Gamov on the other.

Tip: Stay back from the edge and do not climb down to the water on steep slopes. Rocks are slippery in wind and after rain.

  2. Cove with a sandy beach

Where: Between the capes, deep in the indented shoreline

Calm water, sand and a gentle slope into the sea: this is what a good day in southern Primorye looks like.

Tip: Check whether the cove is part of a protected area or the border zone. Take your rubbish away with you.

  3. Offshore islands

Where: Close to the coast, in the waters of the bay

The islands give the seascape depth and layers. Part of the district's coastal waters belongs to the marine reserve.

Tip: Do not try to reach the islands by swimming or on an inflatable mattress. Enjoy them from the shore or from an organised boat trip.

  4. Lighthouse

Where: On the capes; there is one on Cape Gamov, for example

A lighthouse is a landmark for sailors and a recognisable feature of the coastline. On Gamov Peninsula it stands within a protected area.

Tip: View the lighthouse from permitted spots and do not enter fenced-off grounds. Visits to the peninsula follow the reserve's rules.

  5. Forested slope

Where: The hills above the coast and the forests in the west of the district

Wooded slopes rise above the coves and stretch inland. In the west, the forests are protected by Land of the Leopard National Park and Kedrovaya Pad Nature Reserve.

Tip: Walk only on permitted routes. Do not head into the forest alone, and tell someone close to you where you are going.

What to watch

Four things worth stopping for and looking at more closely.

  1. Seabirds

Where: Cliffs, capes and offshore islands

Gulls and other seabirds gather above the cliffs and islands. They are easiest to watch in the morning, with binoculars in hand.

Tip: Do not approach nests or disturb birds for a photo; binoculars and a telephoto lens will do the job.

  2. Marine life near the shore

Where: Shallow coastal water and rocks at the water's edge

In the clear water near the shore you can spot seaweed, starfish and small fish.

Tip: Look only from the shore or on a tour. Do not collect or take away marine life; it is prohibited in the protected waters.

  3. Sunsets

Where: Shores facing the open bay

Evening light over the water and the silhouettes of the capes make a peaceful end to a day by the sea.

Tip: If you stay for the sunset, decide in advance how you will get back to where you are staying: driving an unfamiliar road in the dark is not safe.

  4. Fog over the water

Where: Over the bay and coves, especially in damp weather

Fog transforms the landscape quickly: the capes vanish and then re-emerge from the white haze.

Tip: In fog, do not go out in small boats and do not swim far from shore: landmarks disappear very quickly.

  • Routes

Three routes: a day by the sea from Vladivostok, a weekend on Posyet Bay and a guided trip to protected areas.

  • Local guide

Traveller etiquette on the coast and in the forest, water safety and the 112 emergency number.

  • Cape Gamov: quick facts (in Russian)

Where Cape Gamov and Gamov Peninsula are, the marine reserve and the lighthouse, and what to bring on a tour.
